Relocation and reorganization

Of the Rudolf von Beckerath OPUS II ORgan from the Laeiszhalle (Hamburg) to Münchberg

Expansion and Reorganisation – Organ Relocation to Münchberg

Commissioned and overseen by the State Building Authority of Bayreuth, we are undertaking the relocation of the organ, built in 1950 by Rudolf von Beckerath, from the Laeiszhalle in Hamburg to the Evangelical-Lutheran Parish Church of St. Peter and Paul in Münchberg. This magnificent instrument, comprising 59 speaking stops and renowned for its exceptional tonal quality, is not only being carefully modernised but also expanded and reorganised to suit its new setting to optimal effect.

A substantial portion of the original substance, approximately 80 percent of the pipework, the windchests, and key components of the action will be preserved. At the same time, we are adding stops that were included in the original design but never realised, thereby enhancing the instrument’s musical versatility. Notably, this work will restore the organ’s intended tonal scope while enriching it with additional expressive possibilities.

As part of this project, the instrument will receive a new façade, harmoniously designed to complement the neo-Gothic architecture of the parish church, as well as two four-manual consoles: one permanently installed on the side gallery and another mobile console for use within the nave. Both will be equipped with a modern combination action from our workshop, ensuring convenient and flexible operation.

Since the summer of 2023, our teams have been engaged in the meticulous dismantling, workshop restoration, and sensitive reinstallation of the instrument on site. Every stage of the process is guided by the aim of preserving the organ’s historic integrity while equipping it with contemporary technical refinements for a sustainable future. Completion is scheduled for mid-October.

The Church of St. Peter and Paul offers excellent acoustical conditions in which the full breadth of the Beckerath organ’s tonal palette can flourish. In this setting, the instrument will not only enrich liturgical music but also captivate audiences at concerts throughout the region.

For us, the relocation of this organ to Münchberg is far more than a technical commission it is a matter of the heart. The Beckerath organ of the Laeiszhalle is part of our own heritage, and we take pride in granting it a new home where the past and future of organ music are brought together in a singular way.

The project is directed and managed by the State Building Authority of Bayreuth. All publications are issued in coordination with the Authority, and all photographic material is used in accordance with its guidelines.
